Music Declares Emergency is a group of artists, music industry professionals and organisations that stand together to declare a climate and ecological emergency and call for an immediate governmental response to protect all life on Earth. We believe in the power of music to promote the cultural change needed to create a better future.

That an immediate governmental response is necessary to protect all life from climate and ecological catastrophe.

We call on all those within the industry to join us in declaring a climate emergency and to work towards making the cultural and operational changes necessary to contribute towards a carbon neutral future.

Who Are We

Launched in July 2019, Music Declares Emergency is an independent group with no party political or commercial affiliations. We believe in the power of music to promote the necessary cultural changes to create a greener, fairer, better future.

MDE represents all areas of the music industry irrespective of genre, role, gender, race or sexuality and is led by individuals united by a deep concern for the climate and ecological emergency we currently face. We recognize that the music industry, due to its unique challenges, needs its own group to drive this debate.

Through artist and fan engagement we are bringing climate emergency messaging into the mainstream.

We believe that greening the music industry is a necessary part of creating a fertile environment for artists to speak out and create their own work around climate. We work with our partner organisation, Julie’s Bicycle, to coordinate and activate change within our own industry.

Throughout 2021-2022, Music Declares Emergency will propel the call for urgent action on climate through our NO MUSIC ON A DEAD PLANET campaign, harnessing the influence and reach of artists and fans to bring this conversation fully into the mainstream.

Is it legal to make a
Declaration of Emergency?

The UK Parliament has declared a climate emergency as well as dozens of councils across the political spectrum, including the Greater London Authority, Bristol and Manchester: climateemergency.uk

Making a ‘declaration of emergency’ is an independent decision for each individual or organisation, and can be done in any way that is right for you or your organisation. It means publicly announcing your concerns, lending your voice to the chorus calling for more ambitious political action, and following up by taking action on your own environmental impacts within your remit. Declaring a Climate and Ecological Emergency does not mean endorsing any specific group or endorsing any illegal action.

Finance, Funding, and Donations

Out Fundrazr page was set up to help raise money for initial start-up costs like printing, promotional material and for hosting a launch event. As we grow, we plan to use donations to organize round-table forums and larger scale Music Declares Emergency events. Our accounts are available on request. Control of finance is held equally between core members of the MDE working group and all decisions about spending are accountable to all members of MDE.  https://fundrazr.com/

Actions

These are some suggestions of how you can support your declaration through action. Keep shouting about the Climate and Ecological Emergency. Take individual actions alongside resolute political engagement. What that looks like will be as varied as our community. Individual actions might not add up to much without systemic change, but they can help pave the way there by modelling the world we want to see and opening up more conversations to make a noise. Don’t feel like you have to do everything at once. As a music community, our collective actions and voices will ring out as one.
