ABOUT

Music Declares Emergency US is a group of artists, music industry professionals and organizations.

WE BELIEVE THAT

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS DUE TO HUMAN ACTIVITY ARE A DIRECT CAUSE OF THE ONGOING DEVASTATION OF THE NATURAL WORLD AND CONSTITUTE A CLEAR AND PRESENT THREAT TO LIFE ON EARTH.

THAT AN IMMEDIATE GOVERNMENTAL AND INDUSTRIAL RESPONSE IS NECESSARY TO PROTECT ALL LIFE FROM CLIMATE AND ECOLOGICAL CATASTROPHE.

THE MUSIC INDUSTRY AS A WHOLE, THROUGH THEIR UNIQUE CULTURAL AND ECONOMIC POWER, CAN LEAD THE WAY IN DEMANDING SYSTEMIC CHANGE.

We call on all those within the US music industry to join us in declaring a climate emergency and to work towards making the cultural and operational changes necessary to contribute towards a sustainable future.

ABOUT MUSIC DECLARES EMERGENCY

Launched in August 2021, the US chapter of Music Declares Emergency is an independent group with no political or commercial affiliations.

We believe the music industry plays a critical role in advocating for the necessary cultural and policy-driven changes to create a sustainable future as well as being able to directly reduce their own role in the climate crisis.

MDE US represents all areas of the music industry irrespective of genre, role, gender, race or sexuality and is led by individuals united by a deep concern for the climate and ecological emergency we currently face.

In addition to advocacy outside, we believe that a sustainable music industry that does not contribute to the climate crisis is critical.

Throughout 2021-2022, Music Declares Emergency US will propel the call for urgent action on climate through our NO MUSIC ON A DEAD PLANET campaign, harnessing the influence and reach of artists and fans to bring this conversation fully into the mainstream.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO JOIN MUSIC DECLARES EMERGENCY?

Making a declaration of emergency is an independent decision for each individual or organization, and can be done in any way that is right for you/your organisation.

It means publicly announcing your concerns, lending your voice to the chorus calling for more ambitious political action, and following up by taking action on your own environmental impacts within your remit. It does not mean joining any specific group or committing to any actions beyond your limits.

If you are an organization, it does require consultation of your senior team or board of trustees, and acknowledgement that the declaration itself is only one step in understanding and developing a response to the climate emergency.
